The Material Media and Outcome of Factionalism

(p.473) 17 The Layout of Cahokia

A. Martin Byers

University Press of Florida

This chapter provides a discussion on the layout of Cahokia. There are too many exceptions to justify accepting the practicality claim as credible. It is also noted that the variation is not a response to practical concerns but is the result of changes in the rules by which the appropriate positioning of a mound was determined. The centralist and autonomist factions are described. The building of Mound 72 clearly marks the abandonment of Woodhenge 72. Clearly, the mortuary and artifactual deposits of Mound 72 represent the Woodhenge cult as being highly influential and a source of support among the centralist factions of the regular cult alliances. In addition, the Ideological Cult Faction model is confirmed.
