This chapter discusses the population of Malta during the occupation of the Order of Saint John on the island. It makes a preliminary attempt to shed light on the effects of the Order's rule on Malta and the Maltese. It is important to note that the local Maltese population almost entirely disappeared from the historical record, during which the emphasis was on the Order of Saint John and its European members.
