This chapter examines the impact of the May 30, 1925 incident in Shanghai on the Asiatic Fleet's assignment in China. On this day, members of the May Fourth Movement and workers launched a demonstration demanding equality and justice for China. When the protesters resisted attempts by settlement police to arrest their leaders, the police opened fire. Nine young Chinese were killed by foreign police.
