This chapter provides a brief overview of Jordanian politics and policy in their regional context and an introduction to the empirical case studies about politics in Jordan. It discusses the role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in regional foreign policy and the changes in Jordanian foreign policy after the accession to the throne of King Abdullah II. It also describes several case studies including the 1973 October War Coalition, Jordan's alliance with Syria and Iraq and its involvement in the first U.S.-Iraq War.
