This chapter maps out the key problems that beset the United National Front for Change UNFC) from its inception and contributed to its dismal showing at the ballot box. The UNFC failed in part because it was forged only after the presidential elections and just weeks before the parliamentary poll, because it emerged in the aftermath of several cooperation failures, and because it was forced to compete not only against the NDP but also against far more potent opposition rivals. Probably most crucially, the UNFC failed because there was little to no interparty cooperation among the alliance candidates at the district level. Compounded by the prevalence of an illiberal environment and the weak societal entrenchment of Egypt's opposition forces, all these shortcomings are likely to have contributed to the electoral defeat of the UNFC at the polls.
