All of the countries of Latin America were enlivened by the Charismatic Renewal but not all saw the same level of growth. Five countries of Central America and two in the Southern Cone of South America experienced slower growth in numbers than the others. All are relatively small in area and population. Central America gained world attention in the latter third of the twentieth century. Internal wars that were waged in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador affected neighboring countries and pulled in the United States, Cuba, the Soviet Union, and other countries into the problems they were experiencing. Central America became an unfortunate battleground of the cold war. However, once Central American peace accords were signed in 1996, most of the world, including the United States, turned its attention to other regions. To say that the countries described in this chapter showed lesser growth is no sure prediction for the future.
