Before leaving his post, Count Johan Maurits sent a letter to the governors of the provinces in Brazil expressing his gratitude for their support and his fond memories of his time in Brazil. While Count Johan Maurits was prepared to depart, he had not received approval from the States General. Count Johan Maurits wrote a letter to the States General stating that by reducing the number of troops, several regions would be vulnerable. In preparation for his resignation, Count Johan Maurits penned several documents outlining his duties and the current issues that are present in the country in order to better prepare his successor and to ensure that the change of command went smoothly. The issues that were addressed were the military situation and the division throughout the country. Also, Count Johan Maurits described the laws that were created under his rule. These laws were created to guide the people and ensure that they were living honest lives and refrained from any sinful actions.
