This chapter describes a new approach to estimating body mass in subadult human skeletons based on midshaft femur cross-section geometry. It begins by describing the theoretical basis for using midshaft geometry to infer body mass in subadult skeletons. The chapter then suggests that the midshaft is more appropriate than other measures, given its plasticity to respond to changing body shape and size during ontogeny and the absence of phylogenetic pressures to maintain joint congruence, which affect other commonly used measures. Finally, a method for estimating body mass is provided in the form of age-structured LS regression equations.
