Chapter 7 investigates the period after Margaret Carroll’s death and the legacy of racism at historic house museums. James Carroll, then the Civil War, then industry ensured that black history continued to impact Mount Clare. At the same time, black organizations developed to preserve history and provide racial uplift. The National Society of Colonial Dames took stewardship of Mount Clare and transformed it into a museum to commemorate the Carrolls. This chapter addresses the nineteenth-century changes to Mount Clare.
