Abstract

Show Thyself a Man is a study of the Georgia militia spanning the period from the end of the Civil War to the years immediately following the Spanish-American-Philippines War of 1898 to 1905. The focus is on African Americans and how they utilized two types of militia to define freedom, citizenship, and autonomy in Georgia and the United States South. These militia units were integral to the process of emancipation, Reconstruction, and nation-building that defined the latter half of the nineteenth-century United States South.
