This chapter examines the history of Iran's nuclear program since the late 1950s and the forces that shape the country's nuclear program. It explores the country's potential motives for acquiring nuclear capability and what can be done to persuade the leadership in Tehran to abide by the norms and rules of the global nonproliferation regime. It also attempts to answer questions concerning Iran's national security concerns, the importance of nuclear capability in its national collective psyche, and the role of international nonproliferation regime in addressing the nuclear issue with Iran.
