Condoms, Conrad, and Joyce

Condoms, Conrad, and Joyce

(p.89) 6 Condoms, Conrad, and Joyce
Cannibal Joyce

Thomas Jackson Rice

University Press of Florida

This chapter focuses on the symptom of textual prophylaxis present in the works of Joyce. In this chapter, the focus is on the use of sexual discourse by Joyce to introduce the metaphors of consumption and cannibalism wherein Joyce likens the use of the condom during the sixteenth century to textual prophylaxis and the anxiety of contamination by its other through an increasingly consuming and engulfing mass culture. This chapter compares Joyce to Conrad wherein while Conrad illustrates the modernist's fear of contamination by mass culture, Joyce by connecting the elements of prophylaxis and fecundation in his two books enacts the modernist's reaction against and celebrates his avant gardist conversation with the masses.
