Sons of Ishmael

John V. Tolan

University Press of Florida

This chapter discusses how some polemicists tried to use basic cultural differences between Christians and Muslims as a wedge to drive between the two, in order to accentuate the “otherness” of the adherents of the rival faith. One good example of this that is discussed in this chapter is “ A Dreadful Racket: The Clanging of Bells and the Yowling of Muezzins in Iberian Interconfessional Polemics.”

Keywords:   polemicists, cultural differences, Christians, Muslims, otherness, rival faith
