This chapter discusses the Parliament of Fowls, which has very little to do with a beautiful poem about love and sorrow in Troy, despite sharing its metrical form. It proposes that the Parliament of Fowls follows a rich compositional strategy that began to fall out of fashion in the Renaissance and is now almost entirely unavailable to modern criticism. Based on the remarkable numerical design advanced in this chapter, it seems more likely that the Parliament of Fowls was designed from the beginning to be both a spatial and a temporal representation of the wondrous harmony of the created world.

Keywords:   Parliament of Fowls, metrical form, modern criticism, numerical design, compositional strategy, representation, created world
