Diplomats in Blue

William Reynolds Braisted

University Press of Florida

This chapter examines the condition of the still disunited China during 1928. Though the northern expedition of the Nationalists had nominally ended in early June 1928 with the death of “Old Marshal” Chang Tso-lin, it had by no means ended warlordism, banditry, and communism in China. According to the first annual report of Asiatic Fleet Commander in Chief Admiral Mark Bristol, the upper Yangtze was still dominated by the warlords of Szechwan and the communists expelled from Hankow were beginning to mount campaigns of violent revolution, principally in the inaccessible countryside south of the Yangtze.
