This chapter examines the American government's response to the Shanghai Incident of January 1932. U.S. Minister to China Nelson Johnson together with British Minister Sir Miles Lampson, Minister H. A. Wilden of France, and Italian chargé d'affaires Count Galaezo Ciano formed a sort of diplomatic body to address the Shanghai issue. However, despite their efforts, incidents and intrusions continued. This chapter describes the fighting between the Japanese and Chinese forces which lasted until March.
