This chapter discusses Juan Domingo Perón, who virtually wiped out the free market economy in Argentina. He replaced it with an economy that was planned and regulated, and had a massive public sector of nationalized industries and social services. Despite his restraint from imposing land reform, Perón achieved the same end by depriving the rural sector of economic independence, particularly in marketing and pricing. The chapter also discusses Perón's philosophy, justicialismo, which he proclaimed to be the right combination of the forces of individualism, idealism, collectivism, and materialism. This philosophy remained distinct from socialism and capitalism.
