(p.124) 9 The Ch′orti′ Past: An Archaeological Perspective
The Ch′orti′ Maya Area

Robert J. Sharer

University Press of Florida

This chapter examines the history of the Ch'orti' area from an archaeological perspective. It discusses some methodological and theoretical issues in the interpretation of archaeological data and offers a trial cultural-historical reconstruction for proto-Ch'orti' occupation in the southeastern Maya area. It suggests that the trend of recent archaeological and epigraphic research has only strengthened the connections between the contemporary Ch'orti' Maya and pre-Columbian occupation over much of the southeastern area, including the Copan Valley.
