Part I of this book, “Private”, describes what constitutes the private in the context of heavy state control and economic dependence on the welfare state, and engages with current theoretical literature on the problem of “socialist binaries”. This chapter illustrates how, despite arguments against socialist binaries, private space shifts power towards citizens and consumers and away from the state. It illustrates the importance of private space in this process. In defining private space in Cuba, the chapter first recognizes some contrasting attributes of public space, and what important private, citizen-consumer details do not register on the radar in public space and the official domain.
