Martha Bowers
Martha Bowers
Martha Bowers is the executive director of a dance company that is Brooklyn, New York-based, called Dance Theatre Etcetera. DTE has, since 1993, been able to present site-specific performances in Brooklyn, and in other international and national locations. Bowers' work has enabled a multifaceted view to communities and local places as she has also been able to serve as the Third Millennium Foundation's consultant and formulated and imposed the Dance for Tolerance initiative. For her, site-specific dance is a performative response for addressing locational identity issues. New technologies and the addition of virtual space have complicated the notion of location as there are virtual locations, actual material locations, and discursive locations. Since Bowers always fostered an interest in politics and human rights, her works were influenced by social and political issues.
