On Technique

Dean Speer

University Press of Florida

This chapter describes the career and teaching philosophy of Peter Boal. Boal was appointed Pacific Northwest Ballet's artistic director in 2005, after he had retired as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and as a faculty member of the School of American Ballet. He defines technique as being able to look into the “toolbox”—knowing, taking, and using a vocabulary and understanding the tools for applying it. For example, knowing exactly where tendu front is, where 90 degrees is, what is the angle “box” of elbow to head and neck—knowing how to offer these tools to an audience.
