A New Ship for a New Ocean
A New Ship for a New Ocean
The Saginaw was a sleek and narrow vessel. And, as with all ships, her construction reflected more than just the technical and hydrodynamic requirements of marine sail and steam; it also reflected the social organization of the navy. The Saginaw was comprised of three distinct areas. The forward third of the vessel belonged to the enlisted men. The 32-pounder pivot gun, foremast, forward hatches, and capstan were the only significant features on the weather deck.
