This chapter is concerned with the economic policies of the Toledo administration, exploring the policy options available to the government and the socioeconomic and political impacts of the choices made. President Toledo considered poverty reduction to be a central aim of his administration; therefore, the impact of his policies on this objective receives special attention here. Other topics dealt with in detail include the Camisea Gas Project (an integral part of Toledo's vision to make Peru energy independent) and attempts to create microeconomic regions throughout the country.
