Empire and Pilgrimage in Conrad and Joyce

Agata Szczeszak-Brewer

University Press of Florida

The chapter explores the two phenomena of cosmogony and colonialism and it does this by looking at Conrad's and Joyce's texts. In an attempt to explain the mechanism of political and military supremacy, both Conrad's and Joyce's writings point to an association between the motivating forces behind colonization and the primitive forces of cosmogony. The chapter concludes that in order to scrutinize the connection between ancient cosmogony and modern ethics, there is a need to distinguish and define two fundamental elements of the process of creation: chaos and cosmos.
