Introductions
The chapter focuses on the settings of the houses and lifestyles of the factory girls. This chapter highlights the life and routine of a factory girl named Nadia. Nadia's story is important because the author was able to spend the better part of a year with her as she lived through a very typical cycle in the life of a factory girl. Nadia endured the sudden closing of her factory, months of waiting for the factory's promised reopening (which did not occur), a frustrating and prolonged job search, the securing of another position only to see this position disappear, and renewed unemployment and job hunting. The author reveals, although she met Nadia because she was a factory worker and their friendship was established by her interest in her work, at home—as in the factory—Nadia and the women surrounding her did not speak much about work in the factory. Instead, they spoke of marriage, pregnancy, children, and family.
