Historical Overview of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
This chapter provides basic history of the evolution and emergence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It introduces the many facets of “Israeli” and “Palestinian” identity and the complexity and contingency of these categories of identity. Starting with the emergence of the Zionist movement, the chapter traces key events in modern history that have shaped the boundaries of “Israeli” and “Palestinian” identity as well as “Jewish” and “Palestinian Arab” nationalism, including rival promises by the British during World War I and their subsequent mandate. The chapter outlines the differences between Israeli and Palestinian historiographies of the 1948 war that established the state of Israel and created 700,000–800,000 Palestinian refugees and discusses the changes that occurred after the 1967 war in terms of social, political, and cultural boundaries. After outlining the organization of Palestinian nonviolent activism in the first intifada, the chapter discusses the Oslo process and the failures that led to the outbreak of the second intifada.
