Kilowatts and Revolution

(p.218) 15 Kilowatts and Revolution

MIGUEL A. Bretos

University Press of Florida

During the administration of Gerardo Machado (1925–1933), the French scientist and inventor Georges Claude succeeded in generating electricity from the sea at Matanzas, taking advantage of the temperature differential between the surface and the bottom temperatures of great sea depths (Matanzas Bay is almost one kilometer deep). The year was 1930, and Claude's feat, the initial step of OTEC, was potentially one of the twentieth century's transformational technologies. The chapter closes with the career of Antonio Guiteras Holmes, anti-Machado revolutionist and social reformer from Matanzas, whose nationalistic program informed the revolutionary movement that overthrew Machado in 1933.
