This chapter explores the 2000-year history of ritual and religion at the farming community of Chan. It identifies three key ritual practices that have a deep history at Chan: ancestor veneration, cardinal directional symbolism, and veneration of the center of the community. The chapter locates the origins of elite Maya state religion in the complex religious belief systems that developed at Chan and other small farming communities like it.
