Methods of Reflecting on the Bible

Methods of Reflecting on the Bible

(p.189) 14 Methods of Reflecting on the Bible
Maya and Catholic Cultures in Crisis

John D. Early

University Press of Florida

This chapter describes the different methods of biblical reflection used as the basis of Action Catholicism among the Maya. It rejected a method that began with a literal interpretation of a biblical passage from past times using the categories of one's own culture. This interpretation was applied in a literal manner to present reality. A method approved by Bishop Ruiz begins with reflection on the current situation of the community, the signs of the times, and then on the Bible to help understand the theological significance of the current reality. Some found this method was too vague in its starting point. They began by asking questions related to the text to help focus the reading and discussion. These usages of the Bible helped overcome group passivity stemming from a lack of self-confidence and/or experiences with previous catechetical methods.
