Biblical Reflections in Maya Communities

Biblical Reflections in Maya Communities

(p.199) 15 Biblical Reflections in Maya Communities
Maya and Catholic Cultures in Crisis

John D. Early

University Press of Florida

This chapter provides some examples of how reflection on various biblical passages helped Maya groups to persevere in their break with traditionalism, to form sharing communities, to demand their rights, and for women to realize their self-dignity and to take part in the struggle for human rights. The biblical figures were seen as models of behavior. They include Mary at the Visitation event, John the Baptist, and the early Christian communities. There was little concern about metaphysical status as discussed in Tridentine theology. The reflections were concerned with moral action in present circumstances—orthopraxis instead of orthodoxy in the terms used by liberation theology.

Keywords:   biblical passages, break with traditionalism, sharing communities, human rights, women's rights, orthopraxis
