This chapter focuses on Mary's second marriage to her ex-servant Jacob Mathewes. First, it explores her activities during the War of Jenkins' Ear, particularly the interpreting she did for General Oglethorpe and her recruitment of Creek warriors to the British cause. It also chronicles how Mary and Jacob relocated their trading operation to an installation in the Georgia interior called Mount Venture. The chapter goes on to examine the colony's political situation, particularly the challenges to authority posed by a group of "Malcontents" who wanted to reverse many of Georgia's governing policies. Jacob's association with the Malcontents drew Mary into the orbit of their affairs, and chapter 5 demonstrates that Mary's land claims originated as part of the Malcontent movement. It also argues that Malcontent protest strategies influenced the methods Mary later employed to press her land claims.
