“George Egerton,” the pseudonym adopted by writer Mary Chavelita Dunne, exemplified the “New Woman” for Shaw's contemporaries, both in her personal life and professional career as a writer. Shaw admired Egerton's prose fiction, but when she married theater critic Golding Bright, an aspiring Shavian protégé, and tried to move into the lucrative genre of playwriting, Egerton met the same resistance from Shaw as Achurch had. The correspondence between Shaw and Egerton crackles with frustration: Egerton because Shaw insisted on telling her what to do, and Shaw because Egerton refused to do as she was told. Their contentious relationship emerges in this chapter through their correspondence and rare excerpts from Egerton's plays, most of them previously unpublished.
