Chapter 2 offers a recapitulation of the early years of the motor industry and the hoopla surrounding the staging of the 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup Race. These settings allow us to account for the young Joyce's flirtation with this new industry and appreciate his subsequent critique of the competition in “After the Race” in the form of a parody of fashionable sports writing. Joyce's story is counter-cultural in that rather than producing a conventional sports story, his narrator makes but a few preliminary gestures appreciative of the actual race and focuses instead on the tailgate party. The preposition in the title implies that the Gordon Bennett Cup Race is not about car racing or sports but a satire on status-seeking, publicity, profits, gambling, and high living.

Keywords:   motor industry, Gordon Bennett Cup Race, parody of sports writing, gambling, social satire
