The Adena Mortuary Landscape
The Adena Mortuary Landscape
Off-Mound Rituals and Burial Mounds
The Evans site is an off-mound ritual locality in Montgomery County, Kentucky. Among the activities conducted there were the processing of clay, and the manufacturing of mica and barite objects for use in mortuary rituals. These rituals involved feasting and preparing the dead for interment in a large burial mound located 350 m west of the Evans site. For brief periods of time, the Evans site would have been an important place on the Adena mortuary landscape as people gathered to conduct mortuary rituals, reaffirm social relationships, and transport the cremated remains of the dead to the nearby mound.
