Representative of archaeology done on French and Indian War forts over the last 40 years, the chapters in this volume combine documents, images, and artifacts to provide a composite, interpretive impression of sites that allows current readers to access the past. Because the area comprised by the subject forts covers the Appalachian and Great Lakes regions, there is among them much variety but also much consistency in terms of siting, construction, and use. Each chapter offers insight into the projections and exploitation of imperial power during the eighteenth century and presents historical vignettes that enlarge and refine modern day perceptions of the French and Indian War.

Keywords:   French and Indian War, Seven Years War, military archaeology, frontier fortifications
