The Archaeology of French and Indian War Frontier Forts

Susan M. Bazely

University Press of Florida

This chapter presents the results of historical research and archaeology conducted at Fort Frontenac, a French site that was subsequently taken over by the British. The remnants of the various Fort Frontenacs are located within present-day Kingston, Ontario. The posts were initially situated on the north shore at the eastern end of Lake Ontario to control the fur trade but became militarily significant as the imperial struggle between France and England spread into the Great Lakes country. The fort exists only in the archaeological record, but extensive investigations from 1982 to 1985 led to partial reconstruction of the northwest bastion and the west and north curtain walls. Subsequent utility installation, road widening, and safety upgrades to existing buildings allowed further archaeological examination. The authors compare archaeological findings with commanders’ statements and inspector reports to explain existing structural remnants that demonstrate the value of archaeology to confirm or reject documentary source material.
