“Then Came the Conversion,” 1947–1949
With the onset of the Cold War and the Second Red Scare, Crouch saw an opportunity to earn money by testifying against his former comrades. He did so before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, during which testimony he named names, charged the Communists with trying to infiltrate the military and the White House during Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, and described the violence, brutality, and inhumanity of the movement. That testimony made him famous, and he used that fame to publish a series in the Miami Daily News in which he elaborated on his testimony and helped terrify the nation about the Communist menace. He ended this first foray into the realm of anti-Communist informing by testifying in court cases against Dr. Clarence Hiskey and Steve Nelson. Crouch helped convict both men for their roles in Communist espionage. During the late 1940s Crouch thus emerged from his days as a Communist and remade himself as an anti-Communist.
