The Tortured Life of Scofield Thayer

James Dempsey

Thayer and Watson begin to disagree over the kind of material that should be published in The Dial. Thayer prefers German literature, whereas Watson prefers French. Watson is an avid supporter of Pound, but Thayer despises Pound's writing. Thayer is one of the few Americans invited by the wealthy expatriate couple Gerald and Sara Murphy to celebrate the opening of Igor Stravinsky's ballet Les Noces, a famous gala. Thayer's mental instability seems to increase.
