The Tortured Life of Scofield Thayer

James Dempsey

University Press of Florida

Thayer continues to invite feuds, fighting with a British magazine over the verse of E. E. Cummings, whose unorthodoxy Thayer stoutly defends. Thayer also gets into an argument in the pages of his magazine with art collector Leo Stein. During this time, Thayer's hypochondria intensifies. Cummings finally marries Elaine Orr, but after three months of marriage, she dumps him for a wealthy businessman. Alyse Gregory finally agrees to take on the editorship of The Dial. Thayer continues having inappropriate relationships with young girls.
