Thayer's relationships continue to be chaotic, with one of the female staffers who was with him at Edgartown and Bermuda suffering a breakdown. Thayer asks a friend in Vienna to try to track down Marietta, but he is unable to do so. Also, his good friend Alyse Gregory leaves to live in England, and Marianne Moore takes over editorship of The Dial. Marietta finally writes, saying that she and her family have moved to the country. Thayer's paranoia grows. He decides to move to Europe to write.
