In Europe, Thayer finds no peace. Lonely and increasingly troubled, he begs his friends to come to visit and compares himself to the persecuted Oscar Wilde. He begins to question his friends’ letters, wondering if they are forged. He begs Alyse Gregory to come to him with her husband. Though productive in his verse writing, his staff and family are increasingly worried about him. He begs Sigmund Freud to see him.
