The Tortured Life of Scofield Thayer

James Dempsey

University Press of Florida

By May 1916, Thayer had met and fallen in love with Elaine Orr. Before the two married, however, Thayer set himself a test of mettle: to go to a strange city without any money and support himself. He travelled to Chicago and took a job selling automobile directories while living in a modest rental room. He managed to make a living and returned home to marry Elaine, believing he had proven his ability to provide for a family despite his inheritance. The marriage took place in Orr's hometown of Troy, New York, where her family had prospered in paper manufacturing.
