The newly married Thayer and Orr honeymooned in Santa Barbara, expecting to stay there for the duration of the war. Soon after their arrival, Thayer heard of the deaths of Farrar and Seeger. Though the pair was happy enough in the beginning, some traumatic event apparently occurred, and within less than a year the marriage began to unravel. The two returned suddenly to New York, where they not only took separate apartments but also evidently agreed to have an open marriage, each allowed intimacy with other partners. This is the beginning of Thayer's putting into practice his philosophy of free love.
