(p.1) 1 Introduction
Trends and Traditions in Southeastern Zooarchaeology

Tanya M. Peres

University Press of Florida

This introduction by Tanya M. Peres provides a synthesis of the historical foundations of zooarchaeology in the Southeast. Included in this synthesis are brief histories of the three founding centers of zooarcheaology: Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and the University of Georgia; and the two individuals responsible for training the bulk of Southeastern Zooarchaeologists, Elizabeth S. Wing and Paul Parmalee. Projects that played a major role in advancing zooarchaeological-based methods, analyses, and interpretations are highlighted. The remainder of the chapter discusses each of the contributed case studies in the context of traditional and current research trends.
