Flagler equipped his hotel with modern utilities. Thomas Edison provided the electrical plant to provide lighting for the Ponce de Leon. His assistant William J. Hammer installed the equipment and served as electrician during the first season. Flagler drilled deep artesian wells to supply water for the hotel. A yellow fever epidemic in Florida slowed completion of the hotel, when a quarantine cut the town off from the rest of the world. Franklin Smith had difficulty completing his Casa Monica Hotel, while Flagler began work on his second hotel the Alcazar. Grace Methodist Church opened on time.
