Life in the winter resort community had many varied aspects. Among the crowds in the resort town were criminals who preyed upon the wealthy, and the hotels hired private police to watch for these. Guests in the hotels amused themselves with a variety of entertainments including visits to the Casino swimming pool and spa baths. Noted vocalist Emma Thursby made an appearance in the Ponce de Leon ballroom. Archibald Clavering Gunter gathered material for his novel A Florida Enchantment while a guest. Henry Plant built the Tampa Bay Hotel to compete with Flagler's resorts. To expand the Alcazar, Flagler added a fourth floor, and he built a water works to supply water to his hotels. Flagler established a farm at the town of Hastings to supply vegetables to his hotels and purchased an orange grove in San Mateo.
