Flagler began steamship travel to Nassau in the Bahamas with his ship SS Miami. There he built the Hotel Colonial. Flagler purchased the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union and St. Augustine Record newspapers to control the flow of information. Booker T. Washington briefly visited St. Augustine. J. Rosamond Johnson, noted black composer, performed in the Alcazar Casino. Alexander Findlay laid out a golf course for Flagler in St. Augustine. The Spanish-American War had little impact on the city. Flagler became secretly engaged to Mary Lily Kenan. Flagler was involved in philanthropy but considered being a good businessman the best way he could help people help themselves.
