Flagler encountered an impediment in acquiring land for his hotel. When Dr. Andrew Anderson was unable to obtain a clear title to his family land, a compromise with other heirs to the Anderson property led to a temporary solution. But the cloud over the title would linger for years. Flagler obtained a key piece of property by agreeing to build a new Grace Methodist Church building for the Methodists. When Franklin Smith proved unable to fulfil the financial aspect of his agreement with Flagler, the two men decided to go their separate ways. Against Flagler's advice, Smith decided to build his own large hotel, the Casa Monica. Flagler decided to build a second hotel, the Alcazar, and an entertainment Casino to complement the Ponce de Leon.
