Chapter 1 describes Jesus's place as one of the five major prophets and messengers of God in Islam. It examines the nature of prophethood in Islam including the requirements for being a prophet, the importance of prophets in the Qur’an, the belief that each prophet carried the same message, and the belief that there is only one God. By giving a detailed account of Jesus's life and message as presented in the Qur’an, the chapter shows the meaning of belief in Jesus for Muslims. In addition to exegesis of the Qur’an, the chapter also explores many of these issues through the tafsir of various historical Qur’anic commentators, as well as the etymology of the Islamic terms for Jesus, such as ?Isa and al-Masih.
