(p.1) Introduction Sixteenth-Century Spanish Exploration of Florida's Lower Gulf Coast
Discovering Florida

John E. Worth

University Press of Florida

Contact between Spaniards and the indigenous inhabitants of the lower gulf coast of Florida was first made in the sixteenth century. At that time, the lower gulf coast region of Florida was inhabited by Florida Indians. Early Spanish narratives tell how the region could easily be approached by ship. This book presents comprehensive narratives of first contact in this region. These narratives provide a glimpse into the native cultures that once inhabited the lower gulf coast of Florida. The book also gives some historical context for the individual accounts and associated documents. It focuses on the expeditions that framed the incidents described in the exploration narratives. The narratives in this book present ethnohistorical detail on this initial contact.
